Today I had a uncontrollable crying spell and I told my girlfriend, I ended up telling her how I felt about myself ect... She told me I need to see a doctor so I made a appointment with the local GP. On further thinking I'm not sure if I should go see a counselor first or what to do. Can anybody let me know where to start?

If you like your Doctor and trust his judgment he will be a good place to start. If he doesn't find a physical reason for your depression you will likely have three choices an antidepressant, therapy, or both. I think most people are pretty opinionated about which option is preferable. You may want to start reading some articles on the web to see what seems best to you.

Since this is healthy living you'll likely get a lot of suggestions to check your diet and exercise as well. Especially for people who tend to be sedentary or whose diet is poor, improving diet and getting good exercise can be big boost to a persons sense of well being and ability to cope.

hey sorry to hear bout ya rough patch,

i like most have been thru rough times, i found my doctor helpful at handing out meds and sicknotes but not really listening to me.(just my doctor not all)
so i seen a social worker and a psycologist. i find social workers great cause you basically get a biast opinion on current issues along with support. they will help assist you in your choice of seeing a psycologist.
good luck, hope ya sort things out.
as stated above. good diet and excercise is really critical to good well being

As others have said and you've already done your GP is a great place to start. In addition there are things you yourself can do to try and help things along.

* Regular exercise is known to be just as effective in mild to moderate depression as an SSRI (plus you could do both)
* For some people the origins of depression seems to be linked to the health of their digestive system so a healthier diet could help
* Getting a regular dose of morning sunlight is also said to help a lot.

Best of luck with it all and make sure you tell you gf how much you appreciate having her around.

I have started to exercise regularly again. It does help a little but I'm still not feeling content. I eat a relatively healthy balanced diet and have done my whole life. I was having a good day an didn't end up going to the doctors but later that night I wished I had.

My gf is very aware of my appreciation for her :)

I had a terrible day at work which included getting a talking to from my boss and crying behind a Starbucks. It just sucks. I'm angry, hopeless, joyless . . . which makes me feel guilty for not feeling grateful for everything I have, which adds to the depression. I've had depression since I was 10, but this is feeling worse before menstruation. I'm wondering if it's Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. That could be something for you to look into as well.

your doc can refer you to an appropriate specialist.

where are you (which country)?

I'm very sorry to hear that. I dont think it could be Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder as I haven't got my period yet. Im 20 years old, could it take longer because im a male?

me too. good, your doctor can give you a referral to a psych or councillor and it will be significantly covered by medicare.

also try headspace
http://www.headspace.org.au/
and beyond blue
http://www.beyondblue.org.au/index.aspx?

the aus government are putting extra work into mental health, so you've lucked out in that regard.

also, are you employed? if you are, your employer may have a free councelling service. ask for the number to EAP (employee assistance program).

good luck, mate.

^dude, pulling my fist out my own arse makes me feel really fuckin good, but it still isn't worth the pain of putting it there in the first place

erm, not sure if you're being sarcastic or what, but uh, men don't menstruate. :\ so you definitely don't have PMDD.

as others have said, see your GP first and he or she should refer you to a counselor. me personally, i recommend counseling first. if you don't feel that you are achieving the results with counseling alone, THEN ask for anti-depressants. anti-depressants are best when used as a temporary aid in combination with psychotherapy.

My apologies, tommy34

8) Whoops! What an oversight. Your name should have tipped me off. I was feeling so shitty that day that I wasn't aware of much around me.

Since then, I got some 5-HTP, SAMe, L-tyrosine, L-taurine, B complex, and some EFAs. I read about these in Prescription for Nutritional Healing. I'm coming at it with supplements because it feels like I'm adding to my health, instead of giving myself nasty side-effects from pharmaceuticals. I know supplements have side effects, too, but I feel this is more gentle. I won't have the sexual side effects of an SSRI, at least.

I have some 5-HTP but I haven't found a noticeable difference. What are the sexual side effects of SSRIs? I went to the doctor and he referred me to a psychologist that I will make an appointment with soon.

Thank you for all your help everyone

P.s. I was joking about not getting my period :)

good step, mate. talk to a professional. they do help. :)

The side effect I always experience with SSRIs is lower sex drive. Welbutrin is supposed to affect people less in this department, but I had trouble reaching orgasm. I think this is rare, especially if you're a 20 year old man.
